The Prince of Wales to Attend UN Climate Summit in Brazil
The Prince of Wales will join the important UN climate summit in Brazil next month, but the prime minister's participation remains unconfirmed.
Prince William will introduce the prestigious climate innovation prize and engage with the gathering of delegates from more than 190 governments in the Brazilian city.
Environmental Experts Applaud Royal Participation
Sustainability leaders welcomed the prince's participation. One consultant noted that it would enhance what is anticipated to be a complex summit, where global consensus on fresh targets for lowering greenhouse gas emissions is essential.
"Does Prince William attendance at the summit a stunt? Certainly. But it doesn't imply it's a poor decision," she said. "Cop has often been as much about what's termed 'optics' as it is about talks. The Prince's commitment will probably inspire other officials to commit, and will capture worldwide attention."
"I believe the Prince is fully aware that by attending, he'll attract numerous of viewers to the summit. In an time when climate impacts are increasing, but media coverage is declining, any action that raises awareness should be welcomed."
Monarch's Attendance at Previous Cops
King Charles has participated in earlier climate conferences, but will not participate in this one.
Support from Environmental Organizations
A leader from a sustainability organization commented: "All hands on deck – and any high-profile figure like the Prince of Wales, there assisting advocate for the difficult job that is required, is probably a beneficial move."
"[King Charles was in his previous role when he went to Cop26 and contributed to galvanise discussions. I don't believe it always needs the prince and the king to go."
Prime Minister's Attendance Remains Uncertain
The British prime minister has not confirmed if he will participate in the summit, to which every international officials are expected, with numerous already confirmed. He was heavily criticised by prominent climate advocates for appearing to waver on the commitment in recent weeks.
"International representatives need to be in the summit location for the climate conference. Attendance is not merely symbolic, it is a measure of commitment. This is the moment to establish more ambitious government targets and the finance to deliver them, especially for preparedness" to the impacts of the environmental emergency.
