Ex- FBI chief James Comey has denied the charges to providing misleading information to US legislators and hindering a legislative process.

The former director's attorney entered the response representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

The defense lawyer stated he would seek to have the case dismissed for various causes including that his client, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted just days after Trump pushed his attorney general to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald advised the court they planned to submit multiple petitions to terminate the case before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to handle the legal matter.

Mr Comey's case was initially handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under pressure from Donald Trump after his investigation into a different opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to file indictments.

Legal Setting

The former director came across in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was joined by his partner, his wife and offspring Maureen, a US lawyer who the former government dismissed.

After listening to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the charges.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the proceedings.

Previous Events

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about four months into Trump's first term as president. At the time, the director was directing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Moscow and the election effort.

Throughout his leadership, James Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the national vote that he was probing political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against the candidate were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert James Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he misled the Senate by stating he had not permitted an individual at the agency to disclose to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, block and impede" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

In a video James Comey shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he declared he was not guilty and charged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are costs to opposing the former president," he stated. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump published on digital channels demanding his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against the former director and others.
